Impacts and insights from our first project in Kenya!
Nourishing young minds with Vegemi
Vegemi recently collaborated with Wa-Wa Kenya, a non-profit organisation based in Kisumu that supports vulnerable children and young people through creative learning, technology, and community engagement.
The project was developed to take on the challenge of making local nutrition education in Kisumu playful, meaningful, and culturally relevant – helping children understand how good nutrition and daily habits support their health and wellbeing. Of course whilst introducing our microbiome superhero Vegemi!
How it worked
In this first phase, 30 children took part in Vegemi’s learning activities together with group leaders and their mothers.
Children explored Vegemi playbooks focused on the guava — a local nutrient-rich fruit which illustrated how healthy foods give the body “superpowers.” The learning experience combined stories, colourful postcards, toothbrushes, and Vegemi stickers to make the sessions interactive and engaging.

Results and feedback
Feedback from children and educators showed strong engagement and positive learning outcomes:
- 100% of children engaged with the Vegemi character
- 100% enjoyed the Vegemi materials
- 85.7% learned something new during the project
- 75% learned about the microbiome
- 100% talked about Vegemi with their family or people at home
- 100% wanted to receive more Vegemi materials or learn about related topics
According to leaders, the Vegemi resources helped children better understand the importance of brushing their teeth, eating fruits, and maintaining healthy habits.
Cavin Odera, Founder of Wa-Wa Kenya, shared that the materials created strong interest among the children:
“The children are now eager to return for more lessons and activities, and we are happy to integrate these with other learning tools like computers and projectors to make the sessions even more engaging.”

Next Steps
Following the success of this first project phase, Vegemi and Wa-Wa Kenya are exploring opportunities to expand the initiative and bring nutrition and wellbeing education to more children in Kenya.
